A Dirty Little Secret….
In the turbulent world, there is an unceasing stream of calls for peace; peace in Iraq, peace in Sri Lanka, peace in Eritrea, and most vocally of all peace in Palestine.
What does that peace mean, though? We’ve heard the leader of the DNC call Iraq unwinnable. We’ve seen parties as bland as Norway rejected as neutral parties in Sri Lanka, and we’ve seen what Eritrea thinks of UN Peacekeeping in the past week. Now, Kofi Annan and the UN crew give us another peek into the truth about the Middle East and Palestine.
Every year the UN and the Palestiniant Authority (PLO for those who remember the politically incorrect days) have a bit of a love-in on December 7th. Why December 7th? Its the anniversary of the intifada — you know, the terrorist movement within the Palestinian peoples to remove Israeli control over contested territories. Never mind that– no one at the UN will comment on the relationship to the date, though the P.A. has never left any doubt as to the selection of the day.
And how does the P.A. embrace the peace process on this most ’sacred’ of days in the ‘peace process’ and the international community’s acknowledgement of their plight? They provide a picturesque backdrop of Kofi Annan, between UN and Palestinian flags, with a nice three foot relief map of the very familiar coast of the Eastern Meditteranian– one that has no Israel, no Israeli cities, no acknowledgement of the Israeli presence or permanence within the territory.
A picture is sometimes worth more than a thousand words– sometimes it can shine through a million media-friendly sound bytes.
