Presidential Address – Quick Thoughts

February 24th, 2009

I fully intend to post something more substantial in the morning, but I wanted to get some initial thoughts down before sleep.

Listening to President Obama speak tonight, I attempted to get beyond the rhetoric and hear what he was truly saying. I will freely admit there were some good things he had to say and there were some promises made that I truly hopes he holds to as the months go on. At the end of the day, however, his base commentary didn’t really stray off the Democrat reservation.

Obama continues to hold to his belief that it is the Government’s responsibility to spend the money to pull us out of this recession, raising taxes to do it. Unfortunately, he’s wanting to raise taxes on the very people whose unbridled work stands the best chance of pulling us back to positive growth.

By pushing to raise taxes on those who make over $250,000 a year, Obama is going to be stealing capital from small businesses that could be better used to grow those businesses. Rather than look at meaningful reform, he’d rather give into the culture of wealth envy.

On the other side; I felt Gov. Jindal had some good things to say even if I do thing he was too heavy with the folksie stories. I honestly hope he truly meant what he said about the Republicans learning from their mistakes and returning to their roots. Time will tell on this and until 2010, they are relegated to being the sidelin players begging for a voice.

All in all, nothing was said tonight that truly surprised me, but I will be curious to watch what happens over the next few months (even if it’s the same curiosity that makes you keep watching a wreck.
