Stream of Consciousness thoughts on the Presidential Press Conference

March 24th, 2009

Neal Boortz did this for one of Obama’s early speeches, and I figured I would do this for tonight’s press conference. So these are my unedited thoughts that I typed up while listening to it:

Well, they either moved the teleprompters or he’s actually doing without tonight since he’s looking dead at the camera. Most likely they just put it in the center.

Still pushing the 95% of working families tax cut crap.

Lower interest rates for refinancing is now apparently a tax cut.

And here comes the regulation/take over bit.

No, if we pass your budget, we’ll just be looking at bankrupting the country in 20-30 years due to the crushing debt load that no one wants to buy.

He’s still pushing the idea of cutting the deficit in half by the end of his first term, despite what the GBO said last week.

Oh, there’s the teleprompter. Amusingly, I’m sure someone will get bitched at for actually getting it into a shot.

He’s still “angry” about the AIG bonuses. How about you take that out on the person who was the architect of it? And if you’re so upset with the “culture” that got us here, why is your Treasury Department filled with the veterans of those companies?

Wait, did he actually say that we can’t demonize people that make a profit? He might find other hard left Democrats unhappy with him for that comment.

So he has a list. Which likely means the questions were pre-screened. How cute.

So AIG is because the Government didn’t have the authority just to take them over? Why am I seeing shades of Wesley Mouch mewling that he needs broader authority? Complaining that there is no FDIC style system for insurance companies doesn’t give a solid grounding for taking over companies. So now he’s wanting to be able to take over any company that poses a risk to the “financial system.”

Here’s a question: why is it our responsibility to funnel them money?

So we have a couple of minutes of not answering the question before getting to it. Granted, the question itself was pretty damned inane. Asking what the American People need to sacrifice? Honestly, that sounds like more of a gotcha question.

Healthcare, Energy, and Education. Back to the ‘give me more money’ buzz words.

You can tell he’s off the teleprompter now. Lots of ‘and, uh’s.

And now we dance around the ‘will you veto the budget if it doesn’t have certain things you want’ question. Much better to pound in the Healthcare, Energy, and Education buzz words, right? Translation of all the dancing around the subject: No. We have a five to seven minute answer to a question that boils down to a one word answer. The joy of politicians.

Health care, Energy, Education, and Deficit Reduction… beating that drum.

And CBS News comes out swinging. Good question from him. So 1.3 Trillion inherited makes it okay to push it to 9.3 Trillion? Good to know. So Obama is taking a Pollyanna attitude toward growth compared with going with the CBO numbers.

The world according to Obama: if we throw money at Healthcare, Education, and Energy, everything will get better. With all this talk about Healthcare, why doesn’t he talk about dealing with frivolous lawsuits that drive up the cost of healthcare due to increases in malpractice insurance and the like? Sure, it’ll piss off his buddies in the Trial Lawyers, but if he’s that dedicated to fixing things, he can do that, right?

Hey, you press guys are my buddies! Why are you swinging at me like this and throwing facts at me! Cut in half in 4 years! Why ask me about the six years after that?!

Okay, so because they haven’t brought in alternatives, that makes his budget okay? Good to know.

So rather than taking steps that will actually help with dealing with drug violence, we’re going to keep going with the same failed policies of the past. Good to know. I guess that’s not change you can believe in.

Biggest increase in Veterans’ Spending in 30 years. If that’s an accurate representation, that’s one of the few good things I’ve heard tonight. His crap intention of making veterans pay for their own post-service care was reprehensible.

I don’t think I’d take a bet about whether he’s going to go back to the first part of that question unless he’s prodded to do so. The second part of it allows him to trumpet his three focus mantra, compared to the first part bringing up cabinet embaressments.

Want to make a good start at cutting costs? How about you actually stand by your ‘no earmarks’ pledge?

Ah, here comes the prodding on the AIG portion of the question. And he gives a bullshit answer. I wish I could say I was surprised.

And here he spins the answer to make it not look like he’s telling everyone else to pitch in too on the international stage. And he’s completely not addressing the fact that China, who has bought up a lot of our debt in the past, is saying they don’t really want to look at buying much more of it.

So you want people to start buying houses and investing in this, but you’re saying you’re going to look at cutting the mortgage interest deduction? While his point about charitable deductions makes sense, he’s still not addressed the mortgage interest deduction.

Why are we taking up time asking this question? There are so many more important things to be pounding him about.

I’m much more concerned with his ethical/Constitutional viewpoint on Stem Cell research than I am about his morality on this. This is something that should be handled by private funding, not the Federal Government.

This little bit of rhetoric on the Israeli/Palestinian situation is all well and good, but how are you going to get the Palestinians and their allies to accept Israel being present there when they’ve made it very clear they do not see the end game having any place for Israel in that part of that world?

All in all, it’s the same rhetoric he’s been spouting the entire time and he keeps deflecting the issue of his own pushing to double the deficit. Sure, I hope that things do end up as rosy as he’s hoping, but I’m not seeing the facts to support it.
