Government Outrage: Stance on Gay Marriage

April 3rd, 2009

Today, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimous ruled that the ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. This means it joins a small group of states where Gay Marriage is legal. I’m sure I will isolate some people who may have found this blog by noting that I am in 100% agreement with this.

So many of the arguments I hear against Gay Marriage are the same sorts of things that were thrown around about interracial marriage in the Civil Rights era. Just as they were completely off-base then, they are completely off-base now. Allowing someone to marry the consenting adult of their choice is not going to bring about the downfall of Western Civilization.

Now here is where I may win some of the people I just isolate and potentially isolate others. I fully support a Church’s right to say they will not perform a marriage ceremony for a given couple. What I do not support is the Government saying “Well, we’ll recognize the union of this couple of consenting adults, but not this couple.” (Damn, might have just reversed the isolating again.)

Marriage is a religious institution. Therefore, it is the Church’s decision on whether to perform a marriage for a given couple. However, the civil union side of the house should be gender-blind just as it’s colorblind. Not doing so holds to horribly biased viewpoints that have no place in modern society.

So good job on Iowa’s part to recognize that a homosexual couple has the same rights as a heterosexual couple. I would love to see a similar situation come out here in Georgia, but given that the General Assembly can’t find its way to let the citizens of the state vote on whether to buy alcohol on Sundays, I don’t see this having any chance of being properly addressed in the near future.
