Tax Day

April 15th, 2009

Today is April 15. This is the day income taxes are due to be paid to the Federal Government.

I could go into any number of rants about the current income system and the like. Instead, I’m going to ask everyone to do two things today:

1) Take a look at your paycheck and look at what you actually pay in taxes. Take a look at your tax return and look at the amount the Federal Government kept, not how much you got back (if anything). After doing so, consider what you’re getting in return for your money and look at where it’s going.

2) Go to Fairtax.org. Take some time to read through things. If you want to know more, pick up the Fair Tax book written by Linder and Boortz. Actually pay attention to it and then look at the way it gets demonized by many people when it’s brought up publicly and ask yourself why that is.

The current income tax system is simply a way to pander for votes and power for those in Washington. If serious changes are not made to the system, it’s going to remain that way. We’re rapidly approaching the point where over 50% of Americans don’t pay any Income Taxes at all, which is the tipping point where the other 49.9% will have no say in how much they are taxed. And if you’re going to be one of those people who claim that payroll “taxes” are taxes, take a moment to think about what they’re for and compare them to something like insurance premiums or 401K investments. Hopefully you’ll realize that’s an apples to apples comparison, unlike the apples to oranges of payroll “taxes” and income taxes.

It’s days like today, though, that make me really wish that withholding had gone away after WWII like was promised. You’d likely see far fewer people who were completely clueless about what they were actually paying to the Federal Government.
